Does anyone else talk to themselves via their keyboard?
I once read about an author who typed his thoughts when trying to sort out new ideas for a book. I was fascinated to learn that he actually addressed his keyboard each day and typed questions to it. Unbelievably the keyboard answered! No, not really- but in effect it helped him engage that part of the brain that remains subconscious. It’s like playing two different parts in a play. Slipping from one personna to another in order to try and tap into that subconscious stream of thought that actually sifts information and makes decisions.

A few jottings...
Prevarication is the enemy of all who have things to do and I am one of those people with mucho things to do. I should be writing (although I have just spent three hours doing just that) but I am messing with the dictionary...
Words that intrigue me? Oh yes, I've finally swallowed the dictionary and it's giving me dreadful indigestion...
hysteresis - sounds like a wailing cat.
meretricious - sounds like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon
feoff - Surely bad language? Or at least it ought to be!
sedilia - Or should that be senilia - we all know what that is...
No.no... Here's the real stuff...
Hysteresis is a lag or delay in changes in variable properties of a system. (There you wanted to know, didn't you?)
Meretricious is something that is superficially or garishly attractive. (a lot of it about!)
Feoff means to invest or benefit with fief. (Of course!)
Sedilia are the stone seats on either side of the altar for priests to sit on. ( I knew that really)

The Click is mightier than the pen
17/04/2011 17:34
I once put pen to paper (literally) and wrote.
Now I click, tap and navigate. What a huge change to the way we all communicate. I can’t even remember when I last received a hand written letter. I am not a bright, young thing (although I’d like to think I’m still reasonably bright!) but I know many others of a similar age group who are also very au fait with computers and indeed to some degree, social networking.
For me the keypad is quicker than the pen when it comes to getting tumbling thoughts and ideas down on paper. Free writing engages the creative right side of the brain and not the analytical, logical left brain. I believe getting something, anything, down on a blank sheet is the best way to avoid writers block and so I often use free writing to help me think and get going on a project.
Using the keypad rather than the pen gives me a quicker easier way to re-write this stream of consciousness writing and make some sense of it. Whereas editing with pen and paper just leaves me with a confused mess of crossings out and no sense of what I am really trying to say. Having said that, I have many friends who continue to write in longhand – at least initially. They still cherish the feel of pen on paper and love to fill the blank white pages of a notebook.
Long live writers of all kinds!
So what kind of writer are you??
Browsing The Medieval Chronicle
24/03/2011 10:48I was intrigued to find an online zine called 'The Medieval Chronicles through a post on twitter. I found it really interesting and very readable. Do have a look at it if you are interested in that period of history. I found the article on the origins of St Vitus Dance so fascinating...
I guess my interest goes a little deeper than pure interest because I set part of my novel 'The Afterlife of Darkmares' in 1665 rural England and although it's a little after medieval times many things would have been similar.
